INTERVIEW NO. 2 (TYLER VOGT)

Tyler Vogt | Grand Blanc, Michigan

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

How did you start off in photography?

I first got interested in photography when my sister started messing around with my parents camera. She was taking some interesting photos with it, and it looked like fun to me. I picked up their point and shoot and just started to go to town on everything. Eventually I learned a little skill and started to get better.

Tell us a little bit about the city/town/neighborhood you live in.

Grand Blanc isn't really a place with anything exciting. It's quite boring actually, and hard to find interesting places to take photos. My neighborhood was a typical suburban neighborhood. Now I attend Grand Valley State University, and it's shown me ways to so many new photos.

You're in college now. Has that affected your approach to photography in any way?

Affected my approach? Not so much. Shown me new ideas, and given me great places to take new photos? O yes. Just walking around downtown Grand Rapids, or the campus yields great photos just because of the local. I'm taking my first photography class next semester so we'll see how that goes.

Are there any themes that you like to explore through your photography, and if so, what?

Themes? Hmm...Well I would really love to get into more studio and portrait work. All of my work has either been with cars, or just walk around stuff (for the most part). I would love to have the lighting to sit down in the studio and produce some great photos.

Are there any photographers you know in real life who've affected you?

O yes. Gavin Smith. Although he's all over the place, and completely unorganized, he's an amazing photographer. I envy his skill, and his lifestyle lol. I got my senior pictures from him, and even within the couple hours I spent with him, he taught me so much about photography.

Where's your favorite place to take photos?

I love to explore downtowns. Just walk around and take pictures of anything that is interesting. I would really love to get to downtown Detroit and go urban exploring through all the abandoned buildings.

Who is/are your inspiration(s) in photography?

I honestly wouldn't say anyone is my inspiration. I just kinda go with my own style, and don't let anyone influence me.

Which is your favorite photo that you've taken? Is there a story behind it?

Honestly I don't have a favorite photo. I've taken plenty that I love to death, but none that stand out and are like OMGWTFBBQ that one! lol

How would you take over the world?

I would send out an army of evil rabbit assassins that would serenade people with their cuteness and then capture them. Then I would ride in on a golden unicorn, and become king of the world! hahaha

If you had a day to spend with anyone alive, dead, or fictional, who would it be?

Jimi Hendrix for sure. Amazing musician.

What's your current music?

Current music is anything that sounds good. With so many different people around me with so many different styles I pick up songs here and there that are completely opposite of each other, but still equally good. Stuff like MGMT, Phoenix, and Roisin Murphy are my favorites at the moment though.

What are your views on people who "overly edit" their photos using an editing program?

I actually like it when people "overly edit" their pictures. I love to see the different styles different individuals have. I myself get heavy into editing sometimes, and a lot of my results I love.

I actually don't like it when people complain about others over editing. Photography is an art and there are no rules when it comes to art. Editing is part of the photo process now and people can make mediocre photos beautiful with editing.

What would you like to ask our next interviewee?

What is your favorite camera brand and why?

Thanks very much for letting me interview you, Tyler!
